New bar will open at Deganwy

Ip, Ip, hooray for new bar

THE green light has been given for a new up-market cafe/wine bar in Deganwy, and there are high hopes local trade will be boosted as a result.

Nikki Ip’s on Station Road is regarded as one of the finest Chinese restaurants outside London. Its proprietor Nikki had hoped to open the new premises adjacent to the main restaurant last year, but his application was turned down by Conwy planners last December, despite it receiving 49 letters of support.

There were fears that as the premises is situated within a designated primary retail zone, it would be harmful to the “vitality and viability of the designated retail area”.

However, Mr Ip appealed to the Welsh Assembly and its decision was to grant the application. Conwy’s planning committee gave the go ahead last Wednesday.

Nikki’s planning consultant Rhys Davies told the committee: “This is the expansion of a very successful business which is an important local employer. The restaurant brings in customers from a wide area and helps promote Deganwy as a commercial centre.”

Cllr Jason Weyman, who had supported the application all along, said: “I’m delighted this has had the go- ahead as I’m sure it will attract people to Deganwy. It will be open from 11am-11pm, so I’m sure it will encourage people to spend more time in the village.”

Mr Ip said: “I just need confirmation from the licensing department then it will be all systems go.”
