Coleg Llandrillo staff threaten to strike

COLLEGE staff have said they may strike over compulsory redundancies.

Bosses at Coleg Llandrillo in Rhos on Sea are reeling after winning a smaller contract than expected.

They say they can’t rule out job losses – prompting the University and College Union (UCU) to say it was considering balloting its several hundred members if necessary.

The row erupted after a body the college is in, the College Consortium, which is currently delivering £7.3m worth of training, was told its new contract requires it to reduce this to £5.77m.

The college said: "As a result of the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills’ recent announcement of the work-based learning contracts for the coming three years, Coleg Llandrillo and the consortium it leads, will receive a contract that is significantly less than the college bid for, and less than the level of work-based training it delivers currently."

Coleg Llandrillo principal Huw Evans said it had entered into a 30-day statutory notice and consultation with unions before any changes.

UCU said it would consider balloting for industrial action if compulsory redundancies were imposed.
