COUNCILLORS in Old Colwyn have condemned county council proposals to develop a housing estate as poorly planned which will damage existing facilities.
Glyn county councillor Chris Hughes said on Monday that a formal objection to further development of the Glyn estate, outlined in the county council’s local development plan, is being completed this week.
“I’m doing everything I can to help residents in their fight to oppose these plans, as there are plenty of other brownfield sites in the county which should be developed before we look at this proposal,” he said.
“Wherever possible we should avoid building on green spaces. I appreciate there is a need for new housing, but we need to look at the sites which have already been developed.”
The proposal outlined would see 144 new properties constructed on the Blackberry Mountain area of the Glyn estate, currently a greenfield site.
A planning application to develop the same site was proposed last year, but was withdrawn after widespread opposition from residents.
Darren Millar, AM for Clwyd West, also opposed the plans and supported a formal objection due to be submitted to the council this week.
“A large proportion of the residents are concerned about these proposals,” he said.
“I’m very dissatisfied with the way the local development plan is being handled and I think it’s important people’s views are heard.”
