UFOs spotted over Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea?

SEVERAL sightings of strange glowing lights over Rhos-on-Sea and Colwyn Bay have been played down by the Ministry of Defence.

The Weekly News received several calls from concerned residents who saw orange, yellow, red and white orb like objects floating over Bryn Euryn and the West End of Colwyn Bay on New Year’s Eve. Other lights were also reported floating out to sea from Towyn on the same evening.

Linda Hughes, 51, of Cefn Road in Old Colwyn was visiting her brother on Ebberston Road East in Rhos-on-Sea at around 9pm when she spotted the lights.

"We heard a whirling noise then when we turned around it looked like someone was popping tennis balls over the house and then it just went straight up in the sky. We saw eight altogether. They moved quite slowly, it was misty and they dissolved into nothing," she said.

"They weren’t like a flying saucer, they looked like orange orbs. I’m open minded, anything is possible."

Brother Jim Sanford, 46, of Ebberston Road East also witnessed what he described as a UFO.

"We saw eight objects coming from Bryn Euryn, they looked yellow and glowing and went up into the sky," he said.

"They were long and red at the front and yellow at the back. There are some things which are just unexplained, it is the first time I’ve ever seen anything like that. I suppose it was a UFO."

Squadron Leader Peter Sinclair is an official spokesman for the Ministry for Defence and an authority on UFOs and other strange sightings. He said the lights were more likely part of the New Year celebrations.

"I have not heard these reports, however I’ve heard of similar things in South Wales over Christmas," he said.

"My best guess is that it would be revellers on New Year’s Eve. A favourite thing is that people buy these floating Chinese lanterns, they have a tea light inside, it heats the air up and they can be floating away for 35 minutes.

"We are getting increasing reports of these things and I don’t think it is aliens. My best bet is that it’s people having a good time on New Year - and why not!"

North Wales Police were aware of the incident but would not be investigating.
