David Cleverley
A MUCH loved Colwyn Bay artist has passed away following a two year battle with cancer.
David Cleverley died at Llandudno’s St David’s Hospice on September 7 aged 69 after a two year battle with cancer. David was well known in the Colwyn Bay area for his painting stall in the Bay View Shopping Centre and for his support for his wife Hazel, who runs the Daniel Cleverley Trust.
The couple had set up the charity Dan’s Den to raise money for a youth drop-in centre in the town following Daniel being killed in a hut fire aged just 15 at Eirias Park in October 2001. Hazel said she believed David would be remembered fondly by people in Colwyn Bay and thanked the community for all their support.
“I think everybody has mentioned his good humour, his thirst for life. He always looked on the bright side of life even though there were some really bleak times,” she said. “He loved music, poetry and his art - everyone knows him around here for his art. He was a true family man and very proud of his three sons. I would like to thank the whole community, they’ve really pulled together for me and supported me. People have been really lovely. Volunteers have come along to support me, people have come to the door offering their condolences. I’ve had really lovely support.”
Friend Bill McMillan added: “He will be very much missed, he was very much a character about the place and an imposing figure often showing off his artwork in the Bay View Centre. He was a friendly person with a very good sense of humour and very helpful in lots of ways.”
David leaves behind his wife Hazel and sons Jamie, 25, and Hallam, 11. David’s funeral will take place on Friday, September 19 at Salem Chapel on Abergele Road in Colwyn Bay at 1.30pm followed by a committal at Colwyn Bay Crematorium in Mochdre at 2.30pm. Donations can be made to Dan’s Den or St David’s Hospice.
