A CHEF will swap his white apron for life on the road as he prepares to travel the world.
David Gell, 30, of the Promenade, Llanfairfechan will travel to New Zealand next month as part of a year long journey to discover what he wants to do with life.
“I’m very excited. I want to see the world and what’s out there and decide what I want to do with my life,” said David, who works as a chef at the Beach Hut Cafe.
“I have no set plans. I’m going there with an open mind to see what happens.”
David will kick-start his journey in November by attending the Circulation Festival near Dunedin, South Island. He will offer giant bubble blowing workshops for children and put his cooking skills into practice at the circus festival whilst figuring out his next steps.
Later David will volunteer to help clean up the effect of a major oil spill caused by a stranded cargo ship off New Zealand earlier this month.
“It’s about giving something back,” added David.
“This is my first solo travelling experience outside Europe. I’m going to purchase a van and try and come back through to Wales over the year. There’s a lot I want to do.”
He said he was inspired to make the journey after a friend living out there told him about the beauty of New Zealand.
However, back home mum Carol Gell said: “I don’t want him to go. We’ll miss him so much. He’s my youngest son.
“We’ve worked together and he’s been in the cafe for a number of years.
“It’s something he’s got to do. I hope he has a fabulous time over there. I’m going to really miss him.”
