Sainsbury’s to open Mostyn Street store in new year

A SUPERMARKET giant will open a new store in Llandudno early in 2012, creating 25 jobs.

Sainsbury’s has plans to open a new Local store in Mostyn Street, Llandudno, in the former Woolworth’s/ Alworth’s unit.

The small-scale supermarket will create 25 new jobs and is due to open early in 2012.

The new Sainsbury’s Local store will have a sales area of approximately 2,500sq ft and stock a range of everyday products, including fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, snacks, ready meals and other convenience goods.

The shop will open from 7am-11pm and alcohol will only be sold between these hours.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said the Local store would bring a number of benefits to the community.

“The new store will create up to 25 new jobs which will be recruited locally,” she said.

“The jobs provide great career opportunities and provide flexible hours for those who need them.

“Sainsbury’s supports local charities through its Charity of the Year programme, which gives year round support to a local charity and the Active Kids Scheme, which provides sports equipment to local schools and nurseries.

“We feel that by helping to encourage people to shop locally we will be increasing the footfall to nearby traders.”

Paul Smith from Sainsbury’s convenience property team added: “Bringing a Sainsbury’s Local to Llandudno will create jobs and deliver greater choice and value for local people.

“Our Local shops cater for the immediate community and are particularly well used by those unable to drive further afield for their shopping.

“We believe the Sainsbury’s Local store will offer many advantages to the community and nearby traders through added investment, new jobs and increased footfall.”

The news will come as relief to some traders at the top end of the town centre, especially on Upper Mostyn Street, where footfall has slipped since the closure of Woolworth’s in 2008 and the opening of Parc Llandudno, causing a gradual shift of the town centre away from the Great Orme.
