£250k boost for Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr jetty’s

PLANS to boost tourism in Conwy have been given a major cash injection.

A total of £250,000 will be pumped into upgrading jetties in Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr in an effort to promote watersports and access to the beach.

“We are delighted,” said Cllr Andrew Hinchliff.

“It will make the jetty much safer for everybody. It will be a boost for tourism and it gives a chance for sailing to come back to the coast here.”

Work to improve the jetties will include widening and installing slopes and steps to improve safety.

Members of Llanfairfechan Sailing Club have also welcomed the news and believe the work will help promote more watersports events which have declined over the years with the degradation of the jetty.

“It’s going to be safer for children and swimmers,” said Sue Meredith, a member of the sailing club. “It’s great for the community.”

It is understood work on the Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr jetties will begin next year and funding sources include the EU, Conwy Council and Visit Wales.

The proposals are part of the Destination Conwy plan aimed at boosting tourism in the county.

Jim Jones, section head of tourism and community development for Conwy Council, said: “We’re really pleased for Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr.

“It’s how we can improve the visitor attractions and it offers easier access to the water and enables sailing clubs to make good use of them.

“To make great progress we need the assistance of the traders and businesses to achieve our objectives.”
