Penmaenmawr school is top for PE in Wales

A PENMAENMAWR school has been recognised nationally for its efforts in physical education.

Ysgol Capelulo on Treforris Road has been earmarked alongside 40 schools in Wales for the Activemarc Cymru award.

The award recognises schools that make a commitment to high quality physical education.

Glenda Owen, headteacher, said the school was committed to encouraging the use of sport as an integral part of education.

“It means a lot to our small school to be recognised as providing a high standard in physical education,” she said.

“We have received it because of the school's commitment to developing quality physical education and school sport for all children.”

She expressed thanks to all the staff for providing the children with a wide range of physical activities during the school day, as well as after school clubs.

Professor Laura McAllister, chair of Sport Wales, said: “We believe schools play an essential role in building a Wales in which children are hooked on sport for life.

“It is important that young people have positive early experiences of sport and physical activity that build a foundation for lifelong involvement in sport.

“This award recognises those schools that are giving our children an excellent start.”

Research shows that children who receive high quality physical education also perform well at the rest of their school.

Meanwhile, the school also received a Bronze Award for the Bike It scheme, backed by the Sustrans charity. The scheme encourages pupils and parents to cycle or scooter to school to help cut down on their carbon footprint and to boost fitness.
