UPPER Colwyn Bay’s Welsh Mountain Zoo is the new home of a baby female Bactrian camel.
Born in June, Delilah was up on her feet and raring to go only two hours after being born and is already smiling for the cameras of zoo visitors.
Weighing a whopping 25 kilos and measuring 5ft at birth Delilah is already growing at a rapid pace. She will eventually grow to be 7ft tall and will weigh over three-quarters of a tonne.
The playful youngster has already started to venture outside along with the help of mum, Flanka, and dad, Lock, and is exploring her enclosure. The parents have now successfully raised three calves.
Camel keeper Claire Taylor said: “Delilah is doing really well. She also loves the attention she has been receiving from the visitors and even appears to smile when they take her picture! I am really proud of her progress so far and can’t wait to watch her develop further.”
An endangered species, Bactrian camels are the two humped variety and the last remaining wild population is found in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia and in the Gashun Gobi in China.
