Parking time limits have increased in Conwy from 40 minutes to 60 minutes

PARKING limits in Conwy are to be increased following a long campaign by business owners.

The parking limit in the historic town has always caused controversy, as it’s far lower than in Colwyn Bay or Llandudno.

At present there is a 40 minute waiting limit whereas in the other towns there is a 90 minute limit, which has always caused consternation among shopkeepers in the walled town.

During the winter of 2009 Conwy County Council met with councillors and business owners to discuss the situation. Most shopkeepers wanted to see the limit increased to 60 minutes.

Conwy Council agreed but it has taken until now for the signs to be put in place for it to become legalised.

Paul Evans, group engineer for Conwy’s traffic department, commented: “The signs and road markings are being installed for the new parking restrictions in Conwy town.

“Changes have been made to waiting times at various locations in the town and we’re introducing a loading and unloading bay on the High Street.

“We’d advise motorists to check the signs when they park their car to make sure they understand the restrictions in force in that specific area.”

Sara Allardice, of Conwy’s Chamber of Trade, commented: “It will be a bit of an experiment to see whether it will boost trade, but at least people will now be able to do some shopping and visit a cafe if they want to.”

County councillor Joan Vaughan added: “It has been a long time coming, but it’s good news as the business owners wanted it.

“I’m not sure if people will spend more money with the extra 20 minutes, but with a bit of luck it should work well.”
