A ‘CRACKING’ example of community spirit has resulted in a village’s public toilets being saved.
The facilities in Llansannan faced an uncertain future after Conwy County Council withdrew funding.
They have now saved thanks to the efforts of the Menter Bro Aled community group which raised the necessary funds to re-open the public conveniences and take over ownership.
Councillor Sue Lloyd-Williams expressed her delight with the community group.
“The transfer of the public toilets is the first project to be undertaken by the group, and it is one which has been a success.
“Locals and people from further a field come to the village to enjoy the splendid walks and beautiful scenery – the public toilet is a necessity in a community such as Llansannan,” she said.
“I am very, very proud of the work undertaken by members of the Menter Bro Aled group, along with locals, who have given their time freely to support the project, and of course appreciate the co-operation and help supplied by Conwy County Borough Council.”
She added: “The toilets in Llansannan are the first to be transferred in this way and is very much an example of how things can be done.”
The Menter, which was set up as direct result of the impending closure, was not interested in a lease whereby ownership would eventually return to the county.
Instead they took total ownership, with a covenant being drawn up – they will now look for funding to develop further projects in the community.
Assembly Minister Darren Millar passed on his congratulations.
“Although I’m disappointed funding from the council was cut, I’m delighted the Menter Bro Aled community group have been able to raise the necessary funds to take control of Llansannan’s loos. My hearty congratulations to all those volunteers who have worked so hard fundraising.
“This is a cracking example of community spirit which sets an example to us all,” he said.
