Llandudno Junction ladies accepted in the Welsh Ladies' Premier League

LLANDUDNO Junction Ladies Football Team would give the men’s team a run for their money.

Regularly they attract more crowds than their male counterparts.

The team, who train every Tuesday night at the Llandudno Junction Community Club, have just heard they’ve been accepted into the Welsh Ladies Premier League. It was their long term ambition to be in the league, and the team are over the moon.

It means for the first time, their games could be televised on S4C’s Sgorio.

The team started playing eight years ago in the Junction, then they went to Colwyn Bay, and four years ago half of the team split to come back to the Junction.

Twenty three women have signed up for the team, and ages range between 16 to 51. There are two young mum’s on the team, a hairdresser, students, a cake supervisor, nurse, psychologist and a school teacher.

The manager of the team is Sarah Colville, who until a horrendous accident two years ago was their biggest goal scorer.

Sarah said: “It was a 50-50 tackle, it was no one’s fault but I ended up breaking my tibia, fibula and ankle.

“I had to have a skin graft and since the accident I’ve had ten operations.

“I’ve been told I’ll never play football again but we’ll see about that!”

Sarah ended up even signing the other player involved in the tackle.

Two best friends on the team Ann Jones, 51, and Gail Nylor, 48, have supported each after both of their husbands were killed in horrendous accidents.

Ann lost her husband Glyn nine years ago. He worked as a driver for Llew Jones Coaches, and he died in France whilst changing a tyre on the coach.

Gail, lost her husband Maurice only last September after suffering serious injuries to the back of his head after his lorry tipped over in a lay-by near Llanferres, Ruthin.

“Maurice was a passionate supporter of our team and Llandudno Junction Football Club.

“Sometimes it’s very hard to come here as I’m always reminded of him, as he was the one who really led us.

“But when the ball is at my feet then all I want to do is play, I’ll play until I drop dead.”

Llew Jones Coaches sponsor the team, but now they’re in the Welsh Premier League the team will need a second kit and so need new sponsors.

The team is also looking to start up a junior team. Anyone between 14 to 16 is welcome, no one is turned away.

If you can help with sponsorship or would like to join the team please call Gail on 01492 622158.
