Eirias High School awarded top marks after inspection

A COLWYN Bay secondary school is now in the top 5% of institutions in the UK after being given a glowing report.

Eirias High School is now in the top bracket of a small selection of elite schools after it was given a first class report following its annual inspection.

Education and training inspectorate Estyn awarded the school top marks placing it within the best 5% of schools in the UK.

The announcement came last week when the Assembly’s education minister visited Eirias High School as part of a guest speaker appearance.

Minister for children, education and lifelong learning, Leighton Andrews, stopped by as guest speaker and congratulated the school on its achievements. The AM attended the school to celebrate the outstanding achievements of students in Year 11 as part of their progress files at a ceremony at Venue Cymru last week.

Phil McTague is the head teacher at Eirias High School and was pleased the AM had taken the time to commend pupils and the school on its success: “We are delighted that Leighton Andrews accepted our invitation to share, with teachers and parents, in the celebration of the outstanding achievements of our exceptional students,” he said.

Individuals commended included several students who had achieved at a range of team and individual sports.

Hannah Williams has represented Wales since she was nine and having been the best in Wales at under 13 and 15 levels, is currently the number one in the under 17 age group and the 13th best in Europe.

Hannah is now in training for the Dutch Open in July and the US Open in December this year.

Ross Moreton and Ceri Roberts were congratulated on their sailing success. Ross has been selected to join the training squad for the Olympic Team in preparation for the 2016 Olympics while Ceri is also art of the National Topper Sailing Squad.

Ryan Mullen was congratulated for his cycling achievements having recently beaten the fastest ever time for an under 16 rider for a 10 mile Time Trial.
