Llandudno school is tops for recycling

THEIR success at recycling rubbish means children at a Llandudno school have been able to wave goodbye to a bin.

Youngsters at Ysgol San Sior have been so successful recycling and composting their waste that they have eliminated the need for the bin, saving the school £350 a year.

Headmaster Ian Jones praised the efforts of his staff and pupils: “Now we are recycling plastics, paper, cardboard, cans, glass, clothing and food waste, with scraps going to our chickens and compost bin, we simply don’t need an extra bin.

“We used to have three bins and went down to two last year, but now we only have the one.”

Mr Jones has promised to reward the pupils’ dedication to recycling by giving the money saved to the school council so it can decide what to do with it.

Chloe Nelson, 10, one of the school’s team of energy monitors, said: “We look through the bins to make sure there aren’t things in them that could be recycled and always turn lights off if there’s nobody in the room. I hope the money will go towards paying for more school trips and toys for play time.”

Other youngsters were rightly proud of their achievements. Lauren Farr, eight, said: “I like recycling because if we don’t do it, the world will end up as a tip.”

Nine-year old Ciaran Bate added: “I tell my parents to recycle too, but they’re not as good as me at it!”
