POLICE have slammed “arrogant” parents who continue to ignore parking restrictions at Towyn and Kinmel Bay Junior School, putting the safety of children at risk.
An awareness campaign was run in November and traffic restrictions were put in place in the form of double and single yellow lines. This has not stopped parents illegally parking at school pick up and drop off times.
Police have said: “The level of arrogance displayed by some people is still breathtaking in the way they choose to ignore the parking regulations designed to protect their own children.”
“Some parents and carers see fit to ignore the restrictions and continue to put the safety of the school children at risk.”
Towards the end of last year, police report they slapped fines on a number of vehicles and in at least one case an illegally parked car was towed away.
It is felt that the cars in problem positions cause unnecessary blind spots which in turn make it dangerous for school pupils crossing the road.
Headmaster Bryn Charles noted the school’s good relationship with the police and praised their efforts in tackling the problem. He finds it disappointing that a select few still chose to ignore restrictions.
“We run a park-and-stride scheme where parents are welcome to use the nearby church car park and walk the short distance to the school. A lot of parents utilise this but there is still always plenty of room available there,” he said.
Police patrol at the beginning and end of school but claim some parents wait until they show up before moving from the problem positions. They are continuing to monitor the situation.
