A FREE bulky waste collection scheme is being launched for Conwy residents.
Conwy County Council will be collecting up to two items of bulky waste from homes across the county until Wednesday, March 31.
Collections will be free of charge, but booking is essential.
Good quality household and electrical items will be refurbished and sold on, saving perfectly usable items from landfill.
However, lesser quality items will also be collected.
Conwy’s environment portfolio holder, Cllr Mike Priestley wholeheartedly backs the council’s latest green initiative. Cllr Priestley said: “I am delighted to be able to offer this scheme to Conwy residents and give them a chance to get rid of their unwanted goods when having a spring clean.
“Between January and September last year, Conwy recycled 261 tonnes of furniture and I hope we can better that in 2010 through this initiative.
“We are happy to be working in conjunction with Conwy Furniture Reclaim on this in a bid to keep reusable or recyclable items out of landfill.
“Our residents are already fantastic at reducing their rubbish and recycling, but we are now focusing on reuse.
“As well as saving items from being thrown away, the scheme will give the less well off a chance to buy household items at affordable prices.”
Colin Bowler at Conwy Furniture Reclaim said: “We are proud to be partnering Conwy County Council on this free collection scheme.
“We are a community project and work with probation teams and the long-term unemployed in a bid to provide low-cost furniture for Conwy residents.”
Items collected under the scheme that cannot be resold, such as faulty electrical items or fridges will be broken down and their components recycled in a bid to prevent damage to the environment.
