A SOMBRE peal of bells will ring out over Llandudno on Friday evening to mark the death of a popular bell ringer.
Peter Goodwin, 74, who had been a member of the bell ringing team at Holy Trinity Church for ten years, died at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor last week after a short illness.
“Peter was a popular member of the team who joined us in Millennium year when we put out an appeal for more ringers. He last rang the bells on New Year’s Day and his death has come as a shock and sadness to us all,” said Stan Whittaker, the church’s bell tower captain.
Peter and his wife Pauline used to own a holiday flats business in Llandudno, but in recent years had lived in Mochdre.
His funeral service at Holy Trinity on Friday will be preceded and followed by the ringing of the bells, and at 7pm his colleagues will ring a quarter peal in tribute.
Holocaust memorial
OVER 140 people attended an interdenominational holocaust memorial day last week.
Held at the Emmanuel Christian Centre in Llandudno under the auspices of Christian Friends of Israel and members of the local Jewish community, it was attended by the mayor of Llandudno Janet Jones, the mayors of Colwyn Bay, Conwy and Penmaenmawr, chairman of Conwy County Council Glyn Jones and a number of councillors from neighbouring towns.
Memorial candles were lit by pupils from Ysgol John Bright, Rydal Penrhos and St David’s College.
There were readings from a number of different poems and letters relating to the Holocaust and the meeting was addressed by Rabbi Brian Fox of Manchester and Llandudno town councillor Brian Bertola, who spoke of his visit to Auschwitz.
