Exhibition looking back at Trefriw of the past
STEP back in time at Llanrwst Almshouses Museum and discover a fascinating insight into the history of Trefriw and its people.
The History of Trefriw exhibition is a collection of memories about the village through words and pictures researched and produced by Trefriw Historical Society.
The society was formed when a member of the public asked local Aneurin Hughes where Ardda, an abandoned village high on the slopes above the Conwy Valley, was.
Realising a lot of local history and knowledge was being lost he decided to form the society.
“Notices went out for anybody interested to come along to Peniel vestry,” said a society member. “Many people turned up and it was decided to form a committee.
“An open meeting was held with members bringing in old maps and photos of Trefriw. This saw the society move on to produce the Trefriw Oral History Project.”
The project was made possible by funding from Awards for All Wales and over the past year the society has recorded conversations with people who remember what the village was like between 1920 and 1960. Others have lent photos from their family albums.
Memories and photos show how Trefriw and people’s lives have changed over the years. Most of these memories and photos are reproduced in this exhibition.
The History of Trefriw exhibition is on at the Llanrwst Almshouses Museum until March 1.
