Motorist’s speed fine
A SPEEDING motorist caught driving at over 100mph on the A5 Ty Nant to Dinmael road was banned from driving for six months and fined £575 last Thursday.
David Anthony Smith of Thornfield Way, Norwich, pleaded guilty at Llandudno magistrates court to three charges – exceeding the 60mph speed limit on a single carriageway, driving otherwise in accordance with a licence, and driving without third party insurance.
James Neary, prosecuting, said Smith was caught speeding at 107mph in a 2007 Audi car on November 2, 2008.
Addressing the magistrates, he said: “Obviously given the high speed, this case has come before you.”
After pleading guilty to all three charges, Smith, 29, addressed the court saying he had made a stupid mistake.
“It was a stupid thing to do,” he said. “I should not have done it. My friend who owns the car thought I had a licence and I have lost a friend because of my actions.
“It was not my car. I had the opportunity to drive a sports car and I took it.”
The defendant wavered the opportunity to make a hardship plea with the court.
After a short deliberation magistrates’ chairman Emrys Williams said that given the totting-up of points provisions, Smith would be disqualified from driving for a period of six months.
Smith was charged £255 for exceeding the speed limit, £300 for driving without insurance, and £25 court costs.
