Towyn Community Centre row rumbles on

A DISPUTE between users of Towyn’s Community Centre has led to a committee member announcing their resignation.

The member, who asked not to be named, confirmed last Friday they would be resigning from the centre’s ruling committee next month over the dispute, which has excluded a number of groups from using the centre for fear of damaging its floor.

“It’s created a lot of ill-feeling as the table-top sales in particular were not only profitable, but also had quite a lot of value as social meetings for those in the communities,” said the insider.

“The table-top sales have put a lot of money into the community centre over the past three years and I defy anyone to say they’ve ruined the floor. It’s a fantastic atmosphere and we’re really disappointed this has happened.”

Earlier this month the Weekly News reported that the committee in charge of the centre, on Foryd Road, had controversially chosen to ban table-top sales, angering residents who used it.

A 300-name petition opposing the move was sent to the committee, but at the time of writing the rule has stayed in place.

“The centre is for the whole community and not just a handful of people who enjoy sequence dancing and line dancing,” said local resident Valerie Sullivan. “The residents should make a stand and elect a new committee that will listen to them.”

The matter will be discussed at the centre’s next meeting on January 15.
