£38 million funding boost for Welsh flood defences

AN ADDITIONAL £38 million for flood and coastal risk management was announced by environment minister Jane Davidson last week.

Ms Davidson said: "We have secured additional European funding to invest in flood and coastal erosion risk measures across Wales.

"These additional funds will be awarded to projects that support a broad approach to flood risk management, including built defences, raising awareness and increasing resilience.

"We can’t stop flooding, but we can attempt to alleviate its impact on our communities. We are determined to help communities across Wales in the best way possible and the additional funding will help us do so."

Geraint Davies, chairman of the Flood Risk Management Wales committee, commented: "I am very pleased to see them taking the lead in adapting Wales to increased flooding due to climate change.

"We needed an integrated approach to all sources of flooding including rivers, the sea, surface water and overflowing sewers and drains."
