Llandudno policewoman hopes to become top kick-boxer

A LLANDUDNO police officer is in training for a challenge far tougher than patrolling the streets.

Special Constable Michelle Lightfoot-Baker, 36, will be taking a break from stamping out crime in Llandudno to put her feet to other uses in Athens where she will be attending the kick-boxing world championships.

Michelle said: “I’m really looking forward to representing Wales in the British squad. I need to raise £550 to get there first and am appealing to local businesses to sponsor me in any way they can.”

Michelle, from Llanfairfechan, is feeling positive about her chances in the November competition.

“I’ve been doing martial arts for five years now,” she said.

“Kick-boxing is very sociable and not only does it keep you fit, it gives you confidence and makes you feel safe. All of which is very beneficial as a special constable – although I have never had to use kick-boxing to protect myself when at work!”

It takes a lot of determination to get up to international standard in any sport, and kick-boxing is no different. Michelle’s training schedule includes four kick-boxing sessions a week on top of fitness training with the police.

Michelle said: “My success just goes to show that at 36 it is still possible to be fit, active and at the top of your sport.”

Police inspector Andy Broadhead is right behind Michelle in her mission to become the world’s top kick-boxer.

“She’s a really fit member of the team,” said Andy. “In our line of work we do come across confrontational situations and it’s great that kick-boxing has given Michelle the confidence to deal with that.

“ I was quite surprised when she told me she was a champion kick-boxer. I watch what I say when I’m around her now!

“Michelle is a role model to all in the community and has our full support.”
