Trefriw old boy pedals to Paris for charity

A CYCLING veteran is putting pedal to the metal next month when he takes part in a gruelling European bike ride for the 13th time.

Tudur Jones who lives in Trefriw in the Conwy Valley is representing North Wales in this year’s Pedal to Paris charity cycle ride.

The annual bike ride raises thousands of pounds each year to boost the Poppy Appeal and has been held at the beginning of September for the last 13 years.

Tudur, who is 69 years old and will turn 70 just before his Paris trek, has successfully completed 12 consecutive rides since its inception, missing only one of the fundraisers when he did the London to Brussels ride instead.

The ride from Greenwich via Calais to Paris includes riding 250 miles in four days in all manner of weather conditions. Tudur has raised considerable amounts of money for the appeal over the last 13 years and looks forward to the event.

“Since my first cycle ride in 1997 I have raised several thousands of pounds for this worthwhile charity,” said Tudur.

“Every year I say this will be my last but I am back again. I just want to thank everyone for their support.”

Kevin Forbes is the community fundraiser for North Wales Royal British Legion and paid testament to Tudur’s efforts.

“I must stress that for someone of Tudur’s age to attempt such a painstaking ride for the 13th time is a demonstration of remarkable tenacity and determination,” he said.

“It’s a challenging ride, with fresh air, beautiful countryside, and the thrill of cycling 280 miles all the way to the Arc de Triomphe with 300 other cyclists.”

Contributions made to the Poppy Appeal help support the welfare needs of those who have served, or are currently serving in the armed forces and their families in many ways.
