UNRULY quad bikers are making residents’ lives a misery in Old Colwyn and Llysfaen.
Residents fear a serious accident following numerous reports of the four-wheeled bikes racing and skidding through the village and off-road at top speed.
David Curtis, chairman of the Old Colwyn East Residents’ Association, says the quad bikes are running wild and fears a serious accident.
“People on quad bikes have been skidding across junctions, completely oblivious to the danger they’re causing to themselves and others around them,” said David.
“Many problems with quad bikes in Old Colwyn have been reported to me. I have heard one resident complain that he had to brake violently to avoid crashing into a quad bike that appeared out of nowhere on Wynnstay Road. Others have experience problems on Sefton Road.
“These people are extremely dangerous and it’s not just Old Colwyn – they’re now causing havoc in the Peulwys area.”
The matter was raised at a recent residents’ meeting with North Wales Police.
“This issue is one that the police need to get to grips with,” said David. “It’s difficult for the local police due to the nature of the problem. By the time they get to the scene, these people have raced off on their quad bikes.”
Eirias councillor Bob Squire says the quad bikers drive in an uncontrolled manner.
“I am aware there’s been a problem in Peulwys with quad biking and I shall be making further inquiries into the matter,” he said
“I am opposed to people driving recklessly in the area as it can be hazardous to people on the roads, as well as to the quad bike users themselves.”
PC Jason Davies agreed that quad bikes were causing problems for local police teams.
“We’ve had several incidents reported to us by members of the public,” said PC Davies. “The problem is currently occurring particularly in Peulwys, with incidents prevalent in the evening and at night.
“So far we haven’t had any accidents but we’re very concerned about the anti-social behaviour of these quad bike users. It’s not just on the streets, they’re predominantly going off-road by trespassing on private land.
“Landowners have been in contact with us regarding fears for their animals and crops.
“As this is a matter of anti-social behaviour the community beat manager for Old Colwyn, Mike Williams, is looking in great detail at different ways in which we can tackle quad biking in the area.”
