A PASSION for traditional Welsh clog dancing has turned into a dream career for young Llanrwst lass Hannah Rowlands.
After first witnessing clog dancing as a girl whilst on a family holiday in France, Hannah was spellbound and couldn’t wait to have a go.
“As soon as I got home I found a lady who taught traditional Welsh dance and asked her to teach me,” said the 19-year-old.
“I had to travel all the way to Anglesey for the lessons but it was worth it. I admit I did find clog dancing quite difficult to begin with and it was a challenge to learn the steps but I soon got the hang of it and haven’t looked back.”
Hannah has gone on to win prestigious awards at the Urdd Eisteddfod and has been teaching the traditional art of Welsh step and clog dancing in Llanrwst for two years.
“Competing at the Eisteddfod in Llangollen was nerve-wracking but it was worth it for the elation of performing and winning. I came second in individual folk dancing in Llangollen and first in the Urdd,” said Hannah.
Hannah competes dressed in a traditional Welsh costume and has a collection of over 30 pairs of clogs. She will also be competing in the national competition in Cardiff this month.
“I have been teaching for a while now and really enjoy keeping the tradition of Welsh clog dancing alive. The classes are very popular with youngsters,” she said.
“It is good exercise for those who take part and it is helping the tradition to carry on through future generations.”
Hannah currently teaches clog dancing lessons every Friday in the Tabernacle Chapel, Llanrwst and during term time at Ysgol Bro Gwydir.
