An apology to Cllr Steven Woolfe

IN an article headed “Councillor in expenses enquiry” published on October 4, 2007, we reported that Mr Woolfe resigned from Conwy County Council in disgrace and that an enquiry was underway into allegations that he had claimed £20,000 in allowances despite not attending council meetings for more than six months.

In fact Mr Woolfe did not claim or receive any money, whether expenses or allowances, to which he was not entitled. He received only the basic allowance to which he was entitled as a councillor and no enquiry was launched into him or his allowances or expenses.

Mr Woolfe did not resign his position. He automatically ceased to be a councillor because he had not

attended a council meeting in the previous six months due to difficulties and unforeseen demands in his family and private life.

We sincerely apologise to Mr Woolfe and his family for any distress or embarrassment caused by the article.
