Race is on for Games cash

YNYS Môn Island Games Association will be holding a fundraising auction in Valley this Friday.

Going under the hammer will be more than 100 items donated by the Island's potential world beaters. They hope to take partat the bi-annual Island Games on the Channel island of Guernsey next year.

Local radio personality Kev Bach will host the night, which is hoped to bring more than £1,000 into the games cashpot.

Association committee member, John Pritchard said: "Up for auction first of all, will be Commonwealth Games tickets, and then selections of whisky and wine bottles, and cuddly toys.

"All the teams have donated items, so there will be something interesting for everyone to bid for."

Next year, the Anglesey squad will be even bigger featuring two extra sports, women's basketball and golf teams.

Association chairman, Terence Robinson, said: "We need over £60,000 to take the whole squad to Guernsey, and this includes all travelling expenses and tracksuits.

"We would like to thank Anglesey County Council and all our private sponsors who have donated generously.

"Over the last three island games, we have averaged two gold, five silver and five to seven bronze medals.

"But we don't gauge our success on just medal hauls, but also personal best performances from our athletes, as they will be competing against world class opposition."

Anglesey has competed in all of the Island Games, since the inaugural event in 1985.

The Guernsey games will take place from Friday, June 27, to Friday, July 4.

Items will be up for auction at the Valley Hotel, London Road, Valley, from 7.30pm this Friday...SUPL:
