Ysgol Bryn Elian reach new heights in GCSEs

YSGOL Bryn Elian reported their best ever year of GCSE results.

The Old Colwyn school said every year 11 student achieved at least one pass and the overwhelming majority achieved five or more with some achieving as many as fourteen top grades.

Head-teacher, Stephen Matthews paid testament to the pupils’ hard work.

"I am absolutely delighted with this performance; it is overwhelming," he said.

"The students and teachers have worked with real commitment and energy to produce the school’s best ever performance. We laid down the challenge to the students at the beginning of the year and they have responded wonderfully.

"I am particularly delighted to see the school’s carefully focussed, assertive mentoring programme prove so effective in supporting students to reach for the highest achievements. Students work on an individual basis with mentors and the learning coach to set individual goals. Allied with the work of the school’s pastoral support system, including the pupil support centre in particular, the school’s support for student learning is outstanding."

Megan Pownall, 16, from Old Colwyn achieved eight A* results and four A grades and was going for a meal to celebrate in style.

"I’ve worked very hard and I’m extremely happy. I’m going to go to the sixth form and then university as I want to be a lawyer.

James Scott, 16, from Penrhyn Bay celebrated five A* and 10 A grades.

"I’m pleased, I’ve been revising hard with Megan and friends," he said.

"I’m going to study biology, chemistry, physics and English next year. I want to be a lawyer and I’m going to aim high for Oxford and Cambridge universities."

Will Kay, 16, also from Penrhyn Bay was also delighted with his five As, three Bs and one C grade.

"I’m going to the sixth form to study the three sciences and English," he said.

"I put in a lot of revising and studying, a lot of hours. We are probably going to have a party on the Little Orme to celebrate."
